Cards from Sis and Colleen!

I just wanted to showcase some cards that arrived at my home recently.  What made them extra special was that they weren't even for me.  My crafty friends sent them to members of my family.... and they were so appreciated by them!  I loved their generosity of spirit and kindness that they showed my family!

First, back in January, my husband received this card from Sis Patterson of the Paper, Craft, and Scissors blog.  This card features an adorable tractor-driving cow on a slider card!  Everything Sis makes is so well-planned and fun!  I love her imagination and the whimsy she brings to her projects!

When you pull the tab, the artwork pops up and reveals a sentiment.  How cool is that!

A cool thing that Sis does when she sends a dimensional card is to send it in a specially-made box!  I love that touch and it means that her work always comes in perfect condition.  She told me once that her card boxes are made on her Silhouette with a file she purchased.  The boxes are extra sturdy due to  a liner that is cut.

You can see all of Sis' great insights and a link she provides for making this slider card on her blog by clicking here!

Last week, another package came to the house!  This one was from Colleen McCauley of Col's Creative Corner.  This one had gifts and a card for my daughter... and a card for me too!

The thing about Colleen's projects is that they are not only little works of art, but also so incredibly well-made and sturdy.  This was the first time I had seen Colleen's work in person-- what a treat!

This is the card she made for me.  I just love it!  Look at the coloring on the image-- perfect!

This is the card she made for my daughter... Is this just too cute with the custom mini banner or what!

Piper especially loved the bling!

These were such lovely testimonials to the generosity and talent of my crafty friends!  I love that they shared their skills and time in this way!  And it is so much fun to see Sis' work in my husband's music room [read: man cave] and Colleen's work in Piper's room!  Thank you ladies, for thinking of us!

Please visit Sis at her blog, http://papercraftscissors.com/, and Colleen at her blog, http://scrappycol.blogspot.com/!  You will love their crafty inspiration!

A Gift from Sis Patterson ..plus Crafty Piper

My daughter had her First Communion this spring. She was lovely!  As a former life-long Methodist until a year or so ago, I had a lot to learn as an "RE" parent, such as how expensive a little girl's First Communion is after the dress, headpiece, shoes, professional photos, and gifts are purchased!  Truth be told, this is a hard concept to "get" so being excited that eight-year-olds understand and accept the Eucharist is understandable!  ...And the fuss, attention, gifts, and dressing up just makes it fun for them.

What has astounded me is the positive, encouraging support that Piper has received, especially by non-Catholic family and friends!  I think it is a true testament to their compassion and understanding!

Made by Sis Patterson for my daughter, Piper!

One of the most beautiful gifts that Piper received is a card that was created by Sis Patterson. (That's "Ms. Patterson" to Piper!)  When I became Catholic, Sis introduced me to her gracious and generous talent with her gift of a St. Francis card to me.  (You can see my blog post of that project by clicking here.)  Her card to Piper was just as beautiful and creative!

I love the little girl she created and the way she incorporated a window, stamped with a sentiment.  The cross is beautiful, and as always, Sis creates projects that physically feel substantial due to her selection of materials.  I love the subtle coloring on this card.  It is particularly impressive that she has created the feel of a monochromatic card while using many colors, even dark color in the case of the cross.  So clever!

Sis' blog, Paper, Craft, and Scissors, is beautiful and filled with her over-the-edge creative paper-crafting projects.  She is one of my favorite Cricut and Silhouette die cut users and you can always find a link to her blog on my sidebar under "Inspiration."  You can find all of her crafty details regarding the First Communion card she made by clicking here to go to her blog post!  Her photography skills are so much better than mine so I highly recommend going to her site if you are planning to "pin" this card to Pinterest for the best picture!

As a person who struggles sending dimensional cards with delicate 3D elements, I was tickled to see the box that Sis sent this card in!  It is a Silhouette file, she told me, but the secret is an inner liner, similar to the exact cut of the box but just a tiny bit smaller to nest inside.  The card was delivered uncrushed, unharmed, perfect!  (My mission is to figure this out on a Cricut!)

The pink box is the one it arrived in!
(This isn't the first kindness that Sis has expressed to Piper.  Twice, on fantastic international excursions, she has sent messages to Piper through a Flat-Stanley-type of exchange where "Awesome Emily" told Piper about people and places she encountered-- and sent her souvenirs from all the countries she visited!)

Thank you so much, Ms. Patterson!  This card will be a treasured keepsake forever!

Piper is so fortunate to have had many kindnesses gifted to her for her First Communion.  Last night, she finally finished all the thank-you notes and decorated her cards.  She was so serious in building up color layers.  (The Studio G ink pads at Walmart are highly recommended if you have a kid that likes to dabble in color!  At under a $1 each, you can allow them to thoroughly cross-saturate the hues and not give it a moment's thought!  Of course, they are now hers!)

For fun, I helped her create her own little stamp for artsy ownership of her efforts!

"Made by Piper" is on the back of her thank you cards.
I have lots of pictures to scrap of her First Communion, but I am still awaiting the ones from the professional photographer!  I hope to have actual scrapbook layouts to share with you soon -- I am making a memory book for Piper with pictures, cards, keepsakes, and the DVD from the church.

Thank you for checking my blog post! Be sure to visit Sis Patterson's blog to witness all of her crafty genius first-hand:  Paper, Craft, and Scissors.

As always, you can see many of my previous projects by visiting My Project Gallery.

When someone sends you a treasure....

I went downstairs this morning to find a box my husband had left for me that was at the post office yesterday.  I had received a message from a fellow crafter on the Circle message board, Sis 'O Snap, a few days ago, asking for my address so she could send me a card she had made to celebrate my confirmation.  I realized this box contained her 'card'.

Sis 'O Snap, or Noele, created a treasure for me.

It was protected in a box she made of chocolate brown cardstock with a subtle sparkle, wrapped with a silky piece of earthy green binding, and tagged with an inked  bit of cardstock hand-written with:   "For Nadia ~ on her confirmation Easter 2011."  It was already special to me.  Noele shared with me in her initial message that she was not Catholic but that she had read my post during Holy Week where I mention my confirmation.

I opened the box to find an image of Saint Francis that she had created using a variety of Cricut cuts, combined with her alterations by hand.

What struck me immediately, was the figure.  I love altering figures and knew she had to have done this to create this project.  Her kind note indicated that she altered figures and changed heads!  On a later message, she told me these details which I know you will appreciate  (I have removed her sentiments that are personal):

"...the idea has been floating around in my head for so long - with no way to get out as I could not use a paper doll for St Francis. His body and robe were originally a Christmas lady ....his robe was hand trimmed to make it more robelike and more male.  I used the milk girl face from Country life and added an oval to make a full head. It seemed that leaving the face plain was better than adding eyes or other features...  Most of the papers came from the Seasons imagine cartridge - except for the "Italianate" one which interestingly came from a stack called Far East. Go figure - proves a title should not limit you.  It was the first book I made..."

Her details are magical with the hand-drawn lines on the figure's robe and the bird frozen in flight courtesey of a thin strip of acetate.

Noele is masterful in her creation of dimension, creating a sculptural interest.  Some elements are popped up as much as 1" to create perfect spaces for each.

This project 'feels' like a book with its weight, created from a heavy core and her layers of decorative papers.

It is even bound like a book with a fabric binding and creased spine.  I was stunned to read that this is the first book she had created!

Oh, those papers!  Beautiful patterns so lovely together, perfectly balanced in color and scale!  Just like the flora and fauna that she has depicted with her choice of cuts.  Her curved banner with her handwriting expertly mimicks the curve of the tree and balances her beautiful composition.  Just perfect!

The inside is so meaningful with the powerful Prayer of Saint Francis.

This gift absolutely touched me.  Its beauty is not just the lovely artwork and beautiful prayer, but also the gentle kindness of the gift and the generous nature of the giver.  I am so humbled that anyone would do this for me!  It will be an honored treasure to me forever.  Thank you, Noele, for thinking of me and for sharing your talents and your time!

And on that, I will end this post with the prayer.  It is so beautiful!

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
